Historical Legacy

The NPFL was founded in 1972, professionalising the regional leagues that had operated since independence. Renamed the Nigerian Premier Football League in 1990 and fully rebranded as the NPFL in 2015. The 2000s were Enyimba's back-to-back CAF Champions League era; the 2010s belonged to Kano Pillars and Enyimba; the 2020s have opened with Rivers United and Rangers titles, marking a more geographically balanced era.
