help Frequently Asked Questions

How many NPFL titles has Rivers United won? add
Rivers United have won one NPFL title — the 2021–22 season — making them Nigeria's youngest-ever NPFL champions. They have also qualified for the CAF Champions League group stage (2022–23) and the CAF Confederation Cup last-16 (2023–24) in their first two post-title continental campaigns.
Where does Rivers United play? add
Rivers United play at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Igwuruta, near Port Harcourt — capacity 38,000 and the largest stadium in the Niger Delta. Named after Rivers State football legend Adokiye Amiesimaka (1980 AFCON-winning Super Eagle and Nigerian lawyer/politician). The ground was re-grassed ahead of the 2022–23 CAF Champions League campaign.
Who owns Rivers United? add
Rivers United FC is owned by the Rivers State Government. The club was created in 2016 through a merger of Sharks FC and Dolphins FC — both previously state-owned — under a single unified Rivers State identity. Privatisation has been discussed publicly since 2023 but not executed; the community-ownership model is central to the club's 'Pride of Rivers' branding.
Who is the Rivers United coach? add
Finidi George — the former Ajax winger, 1995 UEFA Champions League winner and 62-cap Super Eagles international — has been head coach since January 2022. He led the club to the 2021–22 NPFL title in his debut coaching season and briefly combined the role with interim Super Eagles duties in mid-2024.
What does 'Pride of Rivers' mean? add
'Pride of Rivers' is the official club motto, chosen at the 2016 founding to reflect the merger of Sharks and Dolphins into a single Rivers State identity. The supporters' group adopted it as a chant that runs through every home matchday at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
Who are Rivers United's rivals? add
Akwa United of Uyo are Rivers United's primary rivals in what has become known as the Niger Delta Derby. Both clubs are state-owned, both won NPFL titles in consecutive seasons (Akwa 2020–21, Rivers 2021–22), and the two-hour Uyo–Port Harcourt travel keeps the fixture a regular supporter-migration event. Rivers also have a simmering north–south rivalry with Kano Pillars.
How much do Rivers United players earn? add
Rivers United player salaries are among the highest in the NPFL — typically ₦500,000–₦2,200,000 per month for senior first-team regulars, with top earners (Super Eagles-eligible internationals, captain Malachi Ohawuchi) above that. The Rivers State backing plus CAF competition bonuses give the club a revenue advantage over most NPFL competitors.
