Algeria

North Africa's Desert Foxes — two-time AFCON champions (1990 as hosts; 2019 in Egypt), 1982 World Cup giant-killers, and 2026 World Cup qualifiers as winners of CAF Group G. Home of MC Alger, USM Alger, JS Kabylie and CR Belouizdad, and the spiritual ground of Rabah Madjer's 1987 backheel and Lakhdar Belloumi's golden generation.

🇨🇲
Cameroon

Central Africa's most decorated football nation. Five-time AFCON champions (1984, 1988, 2000, 2002, 2017), the Indomitable Lions of 1990 — the first African side to reach a World Cup quarter-final, the team that beat reigning champions Argentina in the Italia 90 opener and lifted Roger Milla's corner-flag dance into global folklore. Eight World Cup appearances (more than any other African nation), home of Samuel Eto'o, Patrick Mboma, Marc-Vivien Foe, Rigobert Song and Geremi.

🇨🇮
Côte d'Ivoire

West Africa's biggest footballing engine of the 2000s and 2020s. Three-time AFCON champions (1992, 2015, 2023) — the most recent crown a fairy-tale comeback on home soil under interim coach Emerse Faé. Home of ASEC Mimosas and the most-decorated diaspora generation in African football: Didier Drogba, Yaya Touré, Kolo Touré, Salomon Kalou, Gervinho, Eric Bailly, Wilfried Zaha. The Elephants, the JMG Academy, and the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara — Africa's richest top-flight talent pipeline outside Morocco and Egypt.

🇪🇬
Egypt

Africa's most decorated footballing nation. Seven AFCON titles — a continental record — and home to Al Ahly, the most successful club in African history with 12 CAF Champions League crowns. Egypt qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Group A winners and arrives in North America led by captain Mohamed Salah.

🇬🇭
Ghana

The Black Stars nation — four-time AFCON champions, two-time CAF Champions League winners (Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak), and the birthplace of more Premier League exports than any other West African country. West African football's oldest continuously-run top flight (GPL, founded 1958).

🇰🇪
Kenya

East Africa's footballing heart — home of the Mashemeji Derby (Gor Mahia vs AFC Leopards), the 1987 African Cup Winners' Cup (the only CAF continental trophy won by a Kenyan club), and a Harambee Stars rebuild focused on qualifying for the 2027 AFCON in Morocco.

🇲🇦
Morocco

North Africa's footballing standard-bearer. Two-time AFCON champions (1976, 2025), 2022 World Cup semi-finalists — the first African and Arab nation to reach a World Cup last four — and co-hosts of the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal. Home of Wydad and Raja Casablanca, the Atlas Lions, Stade Mohammed V and the wealthiest top flight in West and North Africa outside Egypt.

🇳🇬
Nigeria

The heartbeat of West African football. Three-time AFCON champions, five FIFA U-17 World Cups (1985, 1993, 2007, 2013, 2015), and an Olympic gold from Atlanta 1996 that every African player still measures themselves against.

🇸🇳
Senegal

West Africa's modern footballing standard-bearer. AFCON 2021 champions — the country's first continental title — and AFCON 2025 finalists in a final stripped from them on CAF appeal in March 2026. Home of the Lions of Teranga, Sadio Mané, El Hadji Diouf, the Génération Foot academy that fed Mané, Ismaïla Sarr and Pape Matar Sarr into European football, and the new 50,000-capacity Stade Abdoulaye Wade in Diamniadio. Qualified for the 2026 World Cup in Group I alongside France, Norway and Iraq.

🇿🇦
South Africa

Home to Africa's highest-revenue domestic football league, the PSL (Betway Premiership), the Soweto Derby, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and the 2024 CAF African Player of the Year (Africa-based) in Themba Zwane. One CAF Champions League trophy at club level (Sundowns 2016), and a Bafana Bafana AFCON bronze in 2023.

🇹🇳
Tunisia

North African football's third great power. AFCON 2004 winners on home soil — Tunisia's only continental title. Five-time World Cup qualifiers, conquerors of France in Qatar 2022, and the first nation to qualify for the 2026 World Cup without conceding a goal. Home of Espérance and Club Africain, the Tunis Derby, Stade Hammadi Agrebi (60,000) and a 109-year domestic rivalry that defines Maghreb football.
