Accra Sports Stadium
Accra Sports Stadium is Ghana's 40,000-capacity national ground in central Accra, opened in 1959 and rebuilt for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. Hearts of Oak use it as their Ghana Premier League home and the Black Stars play qualifying fixtures here. The stadium is officially the Ohene Djan Stadium locally, honouring Ohene Djan, Ghana's first Director of Sports. The ground carries the memory of the 9 May 2001 disaster, when 126 fans died in a crowd crush during a Hearts of Oak–Asante Kotoko league match — the worst sporting disaster in West African history. Safety procedures were rebuilt from the ground up after the 2001 inquiry, and the 2007 and 2024 refurbishments further modernised crowd-flow, medical response, and stewarding.
