FT +30 minSafety & fan tips
FNB Stadium was rebuilt to FIFA 2010 safety standards — the highest codified stadium-safety benchmark on the continent. Every gate is equipped with turnstile counters and capacity cut-offs, permanent medical bays sit at each of the 11 entry zones, and the stewarding model was overhauled with the 2009 rebuild. Johannesburg match-day safety culture is also shaped by the 2001 Ellis Park disaster, which killed 43 fans in a crush at a Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates match a few kilometres from Nasrec. The post-Ellis Park inquiry produced the safety framework now embedded at FNB, Orlando Stadium, and every other PSL venue — phased entry, mandatory ticket holograms, closed-circuit crowd monitoring, and a standing ban on entry overselling. SAPS, JMPD, and private stewards operate in visible numbers on Soweto Derby and Bafana match-days.
- security Body and bag search at every gate. Zone capacity is enforced by turnstile count — if your gate is paused, walk to an alternative gate in the same zone.
- payments Keep cash and phone split across two pockets. Pickpockets work the queue at Gate 8 and the Nasrec pedestrian bridge.
- warning Do not wear away colours in the Kaizer Chiefs end. Soweto Derby segregation is strict and enforced by SAPS.
- medical_services Medi-Response and ER24 on-site at every Bafana match. Permanent medical bays at each of the 11 entry zones.
- do_not_disturb Follow steward directions at full time. Staggered exits are mandatory under the post-Ellis Park framework and are not negotiable.

Historical Significance
FNB Stadium opened in 1989 as Soccer City, the first purpose-built football stadium in Johannesburg. On 13 February 1990 Nelson Mandela delivered his first public address after his release from Victor Verster Prison at Soccer City — a moment still attached to the ground in the public memory. The 2009 rebuild by Boogertman + Partners and Populous stripped the original bowl down to the substructure and wrapped the stadium in the ceramic calabash cladding that gives it the nickname The Calabash. First National Bank took naming rights through a long-term sponsorship with Stadium Management South Africa. The 2010 FIFA World Cup opening match, the final (Spain 1–0 Netherlands), and eight other tournament fixtures were staged here. The stadium hosted Nelson Mandela's memorial service on 10 December 2013 and the 2013 AFCON final where Nigeria beat Burkina Faso 1–0. Kaizer Chiefs have used FNB as their primary PSL home ever since, and the Soweto Derby is the default fixture at the venue.
