2025–26 — African league record

Historical Legacy

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) was founded in 1996 as a breakaway from the National Soccer League (NSL), creating the first fully professional top flight in post-apartheid South Africa. Early title races featured Manning Rangers, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. The 2000s were Chiefs-dominant; the 2010s belonged to Mamelodi Sundowns after the Motsepe family took over. Since 2017–18 the PSL has been a one-team era — Sundowns have won eight consecutive titles, the longest dynasty in the history of any major African domestic league.

  1. 1996 PSL founded; Manning Rangers win first title
  2. 2003 Motsepe family takeover of Mamelodi Sundowns
  3. 2010 South Africa hosts FIFA World Cup — PSL attendances double in the following season
  4. 2016 Mamelodi Sundowns win CAF Champions League — first PSL-era African title for SA
  5. 2020 Rebrand to 'DStv Premiership' — title sponsor deal
  6. 2025 Betway Premiership branding adopted ahead of 2025–26 season
