Historical Legacy

The Ghana Premier League was founded in 1958, a year after independence — one of the earliest post-colonial pan-African top-flight leagues. Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak have dominated the competition across nearly every decade. The 1970s and 1980s were Kotoko's African era (CAF Champions League winners 1970 and 1983); Hearts won their CAF Champions League in 2000. The 2020s have seen Medeama SC (2022–23), Samartex (2023–24) and Bibiani Gold Stars (2024–25) each win their first GPL title.

help Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Ghana Premier League? add
The Ghana Premier League (GPL) is the top flight of Ghanaian football. Currently sponsored as the betPawa Premier League, it was founded in 1958 — one of the oldest post-colonial top flights in sub-Saharan Africa. 18 clubs play 34 matches per season; the winner earns GHS 1.5 million and a CAF Champions League group-stage slot.
Who are the current GPL champions? add
Bibiani Gold Stars won the 2024–25 GPL — their first league title (per Wikipedia's Ghana Premier League page). Stephen Amankona was the season's top scorer with 15 goals.
Which GPL club is the most successful? add
Asante Kotoko with 26 league titles (per Wikipedia's GPL page) — a comfortable margin over Hearts of Oak (20). Kotoko are also the only Ghanaian club to have won the CAF Champions League twice (1970 and 1983). Hearts won their CAF Champions League in 2000.
How much does the GPL winner earn? add
The GPL champion receives GHS 1.5 million in prize money (approximately US $130,000 at April 2026 rates), plus a CAF Champions League group-stage slot. The runner-up earns GHS 750,000 and the CAF Confederation Cup slot if not taken by the FA Cup winner.
Where can I watch the GPL online? add
StarTimes Sports carries the full GPL season inside Ghana. The GhanaFA YouTube channel streams two free live matches per weekend. Outside Ghana, Futaa.com covers selected matches for the UK/European diaspora, and SuperSport carries the league via DStv and GOtv in West and East Africa.
How many teams play in the Ghana Premier League? add
18 teams play in the GPL. Each club plays 34 matches (home and away). Three teams are relegated to the Division One League at the end of the season, and three are promoted in from the DOL zonal playoffs.
What is the Super Clash? add
The Super Clash is Asante Kotoko vs Hearts of Oak — the biggest football rivalry in Ghanaian (and one of the biggest in West African) football. The fixture regularly fills Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and Accra Sports Stadium in Accra, and carries Ashanti-vs-coastal tribal and political undertones on top of the footballing stakes.
How does a Ghanaian club qualify for the CAF Champions League? add
The GPL champion qualifies directly for the CAF Champions League preliminary or group stage (depending on CAF's annual ranking). The GFA FA Cup winner qualifies for the CAF Confederation Cup; if the GPL champion also wins the FA Cup, the Confederation Cup slot passes to the GPL runner-up.
