The transfer ended a difficult 12-month Ajax spell that had not lived up to the €23m fee Ajax paid Rangers in summer 2022. Fulham approached the deal as a buy-low reset on a player whose Champions League and senior-Nigeria pedigree was clear; the fee structure included a base figure plus performance bonuses tied to Premier League appearances and Nigeria caps that have since cleared.

Bassey has logged 80+ Premier League appearances for Fulham across two-and-a-half seasons. Marco Silva uses him in a defensive partnership alongside Tosin Adarabioyo in a 4-2-3-1, with Bassey on the left as the left-footed centre-back; he occasionally fills in at left-back when Antonee Robinson is unavailable. Highlights include the December 2023 win at Old Trafford, where he was Fulham's man of the match.

His current contract runs to summer 2027 with a club option for a further year. Reports in The Athletic at the time of signing put his salary at around £55,000 per week, which would have been midway through Fulham's wage structure. Whether that has been renegotiated upward following his AFCON 2025 Team of the Tournament selection has not been publicly disclosed.

The result kept Nigeria's qualification hopes alive but the Super Eagles still finished second in their group, which meant the November 2025 CAF playoff route. Bassey's goal was a header from a set-piece situation, and was Nigeria's only goal of the match.

On 16 November 2025 in Rabat, Nigeria lost the playoff final 4-3 on penalties to DR Congo after a 1-1 draw through extra time. Bassey started the match alongside Wilfred Ndidi as part of the spine Éric Chelle had built. Frank Onyeka opened scoring inside three minutes; Meschack Elia equalised. DR Congo substitute keeper Timothy Fayulu saved twice in the shootout and Chancel Mbemba converted the decisive kick.

Six weeks later came AFCON 2025 in Morocco. Bassey started every Super Eagles match as Nigeria finished third (semi-final defeat to DR Congo on penalties; third-place playoff win over Egypt). He was named to the CAF Team of the Tournament for his combined defensive and aerial output. He was simultaneously named vice-captain ahead of the tournament after Wilfred Ndidi took the armband.

His route into senior football is unusual: Italy by birth, Scotland and England by upbringing, eligibility for three different national teams. Bassey played for England's youth selections at the U-20 level before switching to Nigeria in 2022, joining a 2020s pattern that includes Ademola Lookman (born London) and several other heritage-eligible Super Eagles.

Rangers were the breakthrough club. Bassey joined from Leicester's youth setup in 2020 and broke into the Rangers first team for the 2021-22 season. He started the 2022 UEFA Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville (Rangers lost on penalties) and was sold to Ajax that summer for a fee that significantly increased his market value.

Marco Silva at Fulham has been the steadying influence. After the difficult Ajax season under Alfred Schreuder, Silva committed to him as a left-footed centre-back and gave him a defensive system that suits his strengths.
