LEGENDARY SCORERS
The heroes who defined the derby across generations.
MEMORABLE NIGHTS
VIBRANCE OF NIGERIA
Enyimba fans — the 'People's Elephant' supporters' group — wear red and white and sing almost exclusively in Igbo. The brass band that backs every Enyimba goal at the Enyimba International Stadium has operated continuously since the 2003 CAF Champions League run. The pre-match tradition includes the Igbo war cry 'Ogbu Ozu Eze' ('slayer of the king's corpse'), shouted three times before kick-off when Pillars are the visitors.
Kano Pillars fans — the 'Sai Masu Gida' supporters — wear yellow and green, and sing almost exclusively in Hausa. The Sahara Field home end fills 60 minutes before kick-off and the pre-match recitation of 'Fatihah' by Muslim fans is a defining Sahara Field sound. Away travel to Aba includes a 16-hour overland journey each way that has become a folklore element of the Pillars supporters' culture.
Derby Chants & Traditions
Enyimba brass band
Operates continuously at Enyimba International Stadium since 2003 CAF Champions League era. Plays a specific composition on each Enyimba goal; the instrumentation has not changed in 23 years.
Sahara Field Fatihah
Pre-match Qur'anic recitation by Muslim Kano Pillars supporters. Observed in the home end at the Sahara Field; not a club-organised tradition but consistently observed by the Pillars ultras group for over 15 years.
Ogbu Ozu Eze
Three-chant Igbo war cry shouted by Enyimba fans before Oriental Derby kick-offs at Aba. Literally 'slayer of the king's corpse'; used as a deliberate cultural and historical marker.
16-hour overland away-support
Kano Pillars fans travel by road to Aba in 30-bus convoys organised weeks in advance. The return journey is a cultural landmark of the Pillars supporters' culture.
Safety & Logistics
Wear neutral colours when travelling between Aba (south-east) and Kano (north) on derby day. Intercity-bus segregation can be a security issue; Enyimba-Kano overlapping travel weekends have had documented flare-ups since 2013.
Segregation is enforced at both the Enyimba International Stadium and Sahara Field. Away-supporter entry through designated Gate C at both grounds. Do not cross into the wrong block — the Nigeria Police is strict about NPFL derby seating.
The Nigeria Police Force deploys 400+ officers at NPFL Oriental Derbies (rising to 800 at Abuja neutral-venue fixtures). Comply with any direction; crowd-management protocol has tightened since the 2015 Federation Cup final crush at the Abuja National Stadium.
In Aba: avoid the Asa-Nnentu area 2 hours before and after kick-off. In Kano: the Kwari Market area is lively on derby mornings; Sabon Gari neighbourhood hotels are the standard away-fan base. Use registered taxis, not okadas, on derby day.
Keep phone and cash separate. Both grounds have documented pickpocket problems at turnstile crushes. Mobile-money balances (Opay, PalmPay, Moniepoint) are the safer carrying option than physical cash for derby match-days.
Nigeria Red Cross + the state medical services run on-site trauma stations at both grounds. Free for emergency cases. Enyimba International has the better-equipped post-2022 refurbished medical wing; Sahara Field's is being upgraded ahead of AFCON 2027 warm-up fixtures.
