Ligue 1 Côte d'Ivoire Format and Continental Qualification

Sixteen clubs contest Ligue 1 Côte d'Ivoire, the top division of Ivorian football, with the champion qualifying for the CAF Champions League and the runner-up for the CAF Confederation Cup.

The bottom clubs are relegated to Ligue 2 Côte d'Ivoire, with the leading second-tier sides promoted in their place. The domestic season runs alongside the Coupe de Côte d'Ivoire and the Coupe Houphouët-Boigny.

Founded in 1960, the year of independence, the league is one of the oldest in post-colonial Africa. It has run under several names over the decades, from the original Superdivision through sponsor eras with Orange and MTN, and is now backed by LONACI, the national lottery.

ASEC Mimosas: 30 Titles and a 108-Match Unbeaten Run

ASEC Mimosas have won 30 Ligue 1 titles, nearly double the tally of any other club, and went 108 competitive matches unbeaten between 1989 and 1994, among the longest such runs in world football.

Founded in 1948 and based in Abidjan, ASEC have built the most dominant record in Ivorian football. Their title runs include six in a row from 1990 to 1995 and seven straight from 2000 to 2006. The unbeaten streak, covering league and cup, ended in June 1994.

ASEC are also the only Ivorian club to be crowned champions of Africa, winning the CAF Champions League in 1998. They added their 30th league title in 2025–26.

Africa Sports: 18 Titles and Continental Honours

Africa Sports hold 18 Ligue 1 titles and two African Cup Winners' Cups, won in 1992 and 1999, the other half of Ivorian football's defining rivalry.

Founded in 1947, a year before ASEC, Africa Sports were the dominant force in the early decades and have won 21 Coupe de Côte d'Ivoire trophies alongside their league titles. Their continental peak came in the 1990s with the two Cup Winners' Cups and a CAF Super Cup in 1993. Their most recent league title came in 2010–11, and the club has since spent time outside the top flight.

The Derby of Abidjan: ASEC Mimosas vs Africa Sports

The Derby of Abidjan between ASEC Mimosas and Africa Sports has been the centrepiece of Ivorian club football since both clubs were founded in the late 1940s.

Both are based in Abidjan and both have used Stade Robert Champroux for everyday fixtures, with the biggest meetings moved to larger grounds in the city. Africa Sports led the early head-to-head, but ASEC have been on top since the 1990s. The fixture carries weight well beyond the pitch in the life of the city.

All-Time Champions Across Eleven Clubs

Eleven different clubs have won Ligue 1 Côte d'Ivoire since 1960, though ASEC Mimosas and Africa Sports account for 48 of the titles between them.

Behind the two Abidjan giants, Stade d'Abidjan have won six titles, the most recent in 2024–25, while Stella Club d'Adjamé and Séwé Sport have three each. The spread has widened recently: SO de l'Armée, Racing Club Abidjan and FC San Pédro have all been champions in the past decade, with San Pédro's 2023–24 title the first to leave Abidjan for the southwest port city.

  • ASEC Mimosas: 30 titles (most recent 2025–26)
  • Africa Sports: 18 titles (2010–11)
  • Stade d'Abidjan: 6 titles (2024–25)
  • Stella Club d'Adjamé and Séwé Sport: 3 each
  • Onze Frères de Bassam and AS Tanda: 2 each
  • SC Gagnoa, SO de l'Armée, Racing Club Abidjan and FC San Pédro: 1 each

Continental Honours of the Ivorian Clubs

ASEC Mimosas are the only Ivorian club to win the CAF Champions League, lifting it in 1998, while Africa Sports won two African Cup Winners' Cups in the 1990s.

ASEC's 1998 continental title is the high point of Ivorian club football, the product of the same generation the MimoSifcom academy was beginning to produce. Africa Sports answered in their own era with the African Cup Winners' Cup in 1992 and 1999 and the CAF Super Cup in 1993, having reached the African Cup of Champions Clubs final in 1986. Between them the two Abidjan clubs carried Ivorian football on the continent for two decades, even as the national team's golden generation drew most of the attention abroad.

Académie MimoSifcom: The Pipeline to Europe

ASEC Mimosas' academy, Académie MimoSifcom, opened in 1994 and turned Ligue 1 Côte d'Ivoire into Africa's most productive talent pipeline.

Built on a partnership with the French coach Jean-Marc Guillou and his JMG academy model, its first graduates moved to KSK Beveren in Belgium before reaching the top of European football. Yaya Touré and his brother Kolo Touré, Salomon Kalou, Emmanuel Eboué and Gervinho all came through the academy and went on to win major honours in Europe. That production line is the league's strongest claim to global attention, even as its best young players leave early.

The 2025–26 Season

ASEC Mimosas won the 2025–26 Ligue 1 Côte d'Ivoire, their 30th title, finishing with 62 points from 30 matches.

ASEC scored 50 goals and conceded 21 across the campaign, sealing the title in May 2026. The championship continues to rotate among a small group at the top, with ASEC restored as champions after FC San Pédro's breakthrough win the season before.
